Learn what makes Pokémon powerful in Great League and how to build winning teams
Great League has a 1500 CP limit, which completely changes how you evaluate Pokémon. Unlike raids or Master League where you want maximum stats, Great League rewards bulk over raw attack power.
CP is calculated using: (Attack × √Defense × √HP) / 10
Notice that Attack is weighted more heavily than Defense or HP. This means lowering Attack lets you power up your Pokémon to a higher level while staying under 1500 CP, giving you MORE total stats.
High Attack IV means you hit the 1500 CP cap at a LOWER level, resulting in less total stats.
Low Attack IV lets you reach a HIGHER level at 1500 CP, giving you more Defense and HP.
Pokémon like Bastiodon or Azumarill that can't reach 1500 CP even at level 50 with perfect IVs should use 15/15/15 to maximize their stats since they never hit the cap anyway.
How much damage a fast move deals per turn. Higher is better for dealing damage. 3.0+ DPT is considered good.
How much energy a fast move generates per turn. Higher means you can use charged moves more often. 3.0+ EPT is considered good.
How efficient a charged move is (Damage ÷ Energy Cost). Higher means more bang for your buck. 1.5+ DPE is excellent.
The best fast moves have both high DPT and high EPT. Examples: Dragon Breath (4 DPT, 3 EPT), Charm (5.33 DPT, 2 EPT), Incinerate (4 DPT, 3.33 EPT).
The top 3 Pokémon (Galarian Corsola, Cradily, Gastrodon) all have exceptional bulk. They can survive multiple charged moves and outlast opponents in neutral matchups.
Moves like Rock Tomb (guaranteed Attack debuff) and Skull Bash (Defense buff) can swing matchups. Cradily's dominance is partly due to Rock Tomb.
Having multiple damage types on your team prevents getting walled. Notice how winning teams mix Water, Ghost, Rock, Steel, and Fire types.
Pokémon with few weaknesses (like Gastrodon with only 1, or Scizor with only Fire) make excellent safe switches when you're in a bad matchup.
Your first Pokémon should have good matchups against common leads and generate energy quickly. Examples: Talonflame, Altaria, Galarian Corsola.
Your switch should have few weaknesses and win neutral matchups. Examples: Gastrodon, Bastiodon, Scizor (if no Fire).
Your closer should be bulky and versatile, able to win with or without shields. Examples: Cradily, Azumarill, Gastrodon.
Make sure your team can handle Grass, Water, and Steel types - these are the most common in Great League. If your team gets walled by any of these, you'll struggle.
